Campfire Hobo Goulash Camping Recipe
Get the most out of the least camping food, using the least amount of cookware – whether you use a campfire or a camp stove.

Leaving the cook more time to enjoy what they came for.

This Hobo Goulash recipe, like most 1-skillet meals, is so easy to make, and so appetizing, you will have everyone saying it is the best camping meal they have ever had.

This skillet meal has all the goodies; Hamburger, macaroni, cheese, and healthy veggies too! Corn, tomatoes, green peppers, onions.

Serves: 4 – 8 campers *easily expanded for larger groups
Prep time: 15 – 30 minutes
Cook time: 30 – 35 minutes

Note: a loaf of Crusty bread from your local grocery or bakery or hearty stone-ground crackers go well with this dish. Just wrap the bread in foil and set it on top of your skillet or Dutch oven to warm during the cooking stage of the camp meal preparation.
ps. don’t forget the butter if you use bread.

Camp cooking gear:

Here is all you need:

  • Heavy-duty aluminum foil
  • Camping Dutch oven or large cast iron skillet w/lid
  • *optional – 2nd pot or pan to cook macaroni noodles
  • Sharp kitchen-type camp knife
  • Lg. serving spoon/ladle
  • Cutting Board





Hobo Goulash Recipe Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs Hamburger, *or meat of your choice
  • 1 bx, (12-16oz) Elbow macaroni
  • 1 lg. Spanish onion, chopped
  • 1 lg. Green Bell pepper, Diced
  • 2 cans. (14-16oz) Diced tomatoes, seasoned, undrained
  • 1 can (14.5oz) Crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can, (14-15oz) Tomato sauce
  • 1 can, (14-15oz) Corn, (whole kernel), drained
  • 2 cups, (1 pkg.), Shredded Monterrey Jack or cheddar cheese
  • 1 tbsp. Monterrey steak seasoning
  • 1.5 tsp. Salt
  • 1.5 tsp. Black pepper
  • 1 tbsp. Cooking oil

Hobo Goulash Cooking Directions:

  1. Chop and dice onion and green pepper, set aside
  2. Boil elbow macaroni, over high heat, until just soft, don’t over-cook, – approx. 10 minutes, it will cook more when combined – drain and set aside
  3. Brown ground meat – with 1 tbsp. Monterrey Steak seasoning, and drain
  4. Add all remaining ingredients – except cheese. Stir to mix well. Bring to boil again, then move to low heat, or coals, cover and simmer approx 10 minutes, stir occasionally to avoid sticking
  5. Remove from heat, top with cheese, and re-cover for 5 minutes to melt cheese and let mix thicken.

Use these “Smart Campfire Cooking Tips” to make preparing and cooking this recipe easier and quicker.

*You can pick and choose which tips to use to lighten the load of the camp cook when these campfire recipes are made.

  1. Do the veggie chopping and dicing at home and put everything in a freezer Zip-Loc bag.
  2. Combine all spices into 1 sandwich baggie for a quick “open and dump” at camp. No need for measuring spoons or bulk spice containers in your already heavy camping gear load.
  3. Freeze the Veggie Zip-loc before you leave, this will help save ice space in your camp coolers, and it is ok to add them to the recipe frozen or semi-frozen.
  4. The diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and corn can be poured into a gallon-size freezer bag at home so you don’t have to open and dispose of cans at camp.
  5. If not for your first day’s meal, these can also be frozen to help save ice space and weight in your coolers. It will be properly thawed by your second camping day meal.
  6. The elbow macaroni can be cooked at home and put in a gallon-size freezer bag, to save cooking time, (and maybe that 2nd pot), at camp.
